Frequently Asked Questions

Still left with any burning questions about the Hackfest? hopefully you can find the answer below but if not feel free to drop us an email on expathos@gmail.com

  • Green Hackfest Sleepover? +

Sleepover? Yes, that's why we chose a weekend. Starting Friday night and into Sunday afternoon, it's a great opportunity to seriously focus right through the weekend on projects. For those wishing to stay at the venue, we have room for up to 80 people to stay over night with modest beds, showers and reasonable facilities to offer a few hours sleep in between hacking. For those prefering to stay at home (if they live nearby) or in hotels, there are also other options in Utrecht.First 80 confirmed for overnight will be accepted.
  • Green Hackfest Cost? +

    FREE!
  • Who can attend? +

Anyone. It's not all about coders and developers (though their skills are immensely valuable of course). If you are a designer, a UX or UI interface specialist,  a scientist or professional, a writer, a seasoned entreprenuer or startup junkie - or just someone with a brilliant idea - you are more than welcome to attend!
  • What is the goal of the event? +

The goal of the event is to rapidly prototype, over two days, ideas into reality (or as close as you can get). Judges will favour ideas born and worked on at the event over pre-built products that simply tap into APIs  - even if the former are not completely ready. Our goal, as organisers, is to help ensure that great ideas don't fall into the wayside post-event as is common with many hackathons. Our aim is to open up something similar to a Creative Commons bank of ideas post-event to those hackers who are willing to allow their ideas to be further worked on in the future by other parties.
  • What is a hackathon? +

A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate intensively on software projects. Occasionally there is a hardware component as well. Hackathons typically last between a day and a week in length. Some hackathons are intended simply for educational or social purposes, although in many cases the goal is to create usable software. Hackathons tend to have a specific focus, which can include the programming language used, the operating system, an application, an API, the subject and the demographic group of the programmers. In other cases, there is no restriction on the type of software being created.
  • What should I bring? +

Laptop or tablet, comfortable clothing and any gadgets or tools that may help your team win!
  • Who owns the Intellectual Property? +

The intellectual property rights of hacks produced at the event belong to the attendees, and not to the organisers, sponsors, or partners In the past, at other Hackfests, sponsors have requested to license, buy or back new startup ideas, but those deals are outside of the scope of the event and up to the groups or individuals to decide on the future of products or services designed.
  • What will I be provided with? +

Power sockets, WIFI, hot & cold refreshments, food, seating, and beanbags for the lean-back hackers!
  • How big are the prizes & will I be able to take home on the plane? +

Details of all prizes will be posted on the website prior to the start of the hack. If you havent pre-planned any transportation for potential large prizes the hackfest team will assist in arranging suitable delivery to your selected address.
  • Solo or Groups? +

Can I come alone? Yes... of course! You can meet people at the event and join up to create new teams or join an existing one. You can also come as a group if you like.
